tmpfs

A Linux filesystem that stores files in virtual memory (RAM and swap), so its contents vanish at reboot.

Definition

tmpfs is fast and commonly mounted at /run, /dev/shm and sometimes /tmp. Its size can be capped with the size= mount option, and unused pages can be swapped out.

Example

mount -t tmpfs -o size=2G tmpfs /mnt/scratch creates a 2 GiB RAM-backed filesystem.

Exam tip

Data on tmpfs is not persistent; do not store anything there that must survive a reboot.
