Three-Point Lighting

A lighting method using key, fill and back lights to illuminate a subject evenly and separate it from the background.

Definition

The key light is the main source, the fill light softens shadows, and the back light outlines the subject. For video conferencing rooms, diffuse, even lighting on faces from the front and sides at a consistent color temperature works better than overhead downlights, which create eye shadows. Bright windows behind participants cause silhouettes.

Example

Adding diffuse wall-wash lighting in front of participants removes dark eye shadows from downlights.

Exam tip

Avoid backlighting from windows behind participants in video rooms.
