Pan-Tilt-Zoom Camera (PTZ)

A camera that can be remotely moved horizontally (pan), vertically (tilt) and zoomed, often with stored presets.

Definition

PTZ cameras serve classrooms, auditoriums and large meeting rooms, controlled by joysticks, control systems or conferencing software via protocols such as VISCA over RS-232 or IP. Outputs may include HDMI, SDI, USB, NDI or IP streams. Presets allow quick framing of locations, and some models include auto tracking.

Example

A lecture capture system recalls a whiteboard preset when the instructor presses a touch panel button.

Exam tip

PTZ control is often VISCA over serial or IP; verify the protocol and addressing when integrating.
