Color Temperature

A measure in kelvin of the color characteristics of light, from warm (lower K) to cool (higher K).

Definition

Tungsten lighting is about 3200 K, daylight about 5600 K, and displays commonly calibrate to D65 (about 6500 K). For video conferencing, consistent color temperature across room lighting avoids color casts that cameras cannot correct, and mixed daylight and warm lighting causes unnatural skin tones.

Example

A conference room mixes 3000 K downlights with window daylight, so faces look orange on one side and blue on the other.

Exam tip

Match lighting color temperatures in video rooms; white balance cameras to the dominant source.
