Tail-End Hop-Off (TEHO)

Routing a PSTN call over the private WAN to the gateway closest to the destination so it leaves as a local or cheaper call.

Definition

TEHO reduces toll charges by carrying the call on-net as far as possible before handing it to the PSTN. It requires route patterns for remote area codes and careful handling of caller ID, emergency calls and local regulations, since some countries restrict TEHO. Local Route Groups and globalized dial plans make it easier to implement with backup to the local gateway.

Example

A Chicago user calls a New York number, which is routed over the WAN to the New York gateway as a local call.

Exam tip

Watch for regulatory restrictions on TEHO and the need for a fallback route if the remote gateway is unavailable.
