sudo

A Linux command that lets permitted users run commands as root or another user, with logging and fine-grained policy.

Definition

sudo prompts for the invoking user's own password and records commands in system logs. Policy lives in /etc/sudoers and /etc/sudoers.d/, granting rights to users or groups such as wheel or sudo.

Example

sudo systemctl restart httpd restarts a service with root privileges.

Exam tip

sudo asks for the user's own password while su asks for the target account's password.
