Root Account

The Linux superuser account with UID 0 that bypasses normal permission checks.

Definition

Root can read, modify and delete any file and control every process. Best practice is to disable direct root SSH logins and use sudo for audited, least-privilege administration.

Example

PermitRootLogin no in /etc/ssh/sshd_config blocks direct root logins over SSH.

Exam tip

Any account with UID 0 is effectively root regardless of its name.
