STIR/SHAKEN

Standards that let carriers cryptographically sign and verify caller ID on SIP calls to combat spoofed robocalls.

Definition

STIR (IETF, including RFC 8224 and RFC 8225) defines an Identity header containing a signed PASSporT token, and SHAKEN (ATIS and SIP Forum) defines how carriers deploy it. The originating carrier assigns attestation A (full), B (partial) or C (gateway), and the terminating carrier verifies the signature. US regulations under the TRACED Act require most voice providers to implement it.

Example

A call from a customer's verified DID is signed with A attestation, and the receiving carrier displays it as verified.

Exam tip

Know the attestation levels: A full, B partial, C gateway.
