Spam over Internet Telephony (SPIT)

Unsolicited bulk VoIP calls or messages, the telephony equivalent of email spam.

Definition

SPIT is cheap to generate with automated SIP dialers and is used for robocalls, scams and vishing. Defenses include call authentication with STIR/SHAKEN, reputation scoring, challenge-based IVRs, blocklists and rate limiting on SBCs.

Example

An automated dialer sends recorded scam messages to every DID in an enterprise range.

Exam tip

SPIT is the bulk unwanted-call threat; vishing is the social engineering use of voice.
