Stateless DHCPv6

A mode in which hosts use SLAAC for addresses but obtain other settings, such as DNS servers and domain name, from a DHCPv6 server.

Definition

Signaled by the RA O flag with M clear, stateless DHCPv6 keeps no per-host address state. It is useful when the network requires DNS information that older hosts cannot get from RA RDNSS options.

Example

A Cisco router configured with ipv6 nd other-config-flag points hosts to stateless DHCPv6 for DNS settings.

Exam tip

SLAAC plus stateless DHCPv6 is the classic combo when you need DNS options but not address tracking.
