DHCPv6

The IPv6 version of DHCP, which can assign addresses (stateful) or just options such as DNS servers (stateless).

Definition

DHCPv6 (RFC 8415) uses UDP port 546 for clients and 547 for servers and relays, and clients locate servers via the multicast group ff02::1:2. Its four-message exchange is Solicit, Advertise, Request, Reply, with Rapid Commit allowing two messages. DHCPv6 does not provide a default gateway; that comes from Router Advertisements.

Example

A Windows host with the M flag set in RAs requests an address from a DHCPv6 server.

Exam tip

DHCPv6 ports are 546 and 547, and the gateway still comes from the RA.
