Stateful DHCPv6

A DHCPv6 mode in which the server assigns IPv6 addresses and tracks leases, signaled by the RA M flag.

Definition

Stateful DHCPv6 gives administrators control and records of which host has which address, similar to DHCPv4. Hosts still learn their default gateway from Router Advertisements. Android devices do not support stateful DHCPv6 address assignment, which can matter in mixed environments.

Example

An RA with M=1 tells clients to obtain addresses from a DHCPv6 server.

Exam tip

M flag = Managed (stateful DHCPv6); O flag = Other config (stateless DHCPv6).
