Stateless Address Autoconfiguration (SLAAC)

An IPv6 method in which hosts build their own addresses from a router-advertised /64 prefix plus a self-generated interface ID.

Definition

Defined in RFC 4862, SLAAC uses the prefix information in Router Advertisements; the host adds an interface ID (random or EUI-64) and performs Duplicate Address Detection. No server tracks assignments. DNS server information can come from the RA's RDNSS option or from stateless DHCPv6.

Example

A phone joining an IPv6 Wi-Fi network configures 2001:db8:10:1:abcd:1234:5678:9abc via SLAAC.

Exam tip

SLAAC needs a /64 prefix and RAs from a router; it does not need a DHCP server.
