Vishing

Voice phishing that uses phone calls or voicemail to manipulate victims into revealing information or taking action.

Definition

Vishing attackers pose as banks, IT help desks, government agencies or executives, often spoofing caller ID. AI voice cloning has made impersonation more convincing. Help desk call-back procedures and identity verification policies mitigate it.

Example

A caller claiming to be from the help desk asks a user to approve an MFA prompt to "fix their mailbox".

Exam tip

Vishing = voice; smishing = SMS. Caller ID can be spoofed, so it is not proof of identity.
