SIP Trunk

A SIP signaling connection between two call control systems or between an enterprise and a service provider.

Definition

SIP trunks replace TDM circuits with IP signaling and RTP media, allowing flexible capacity, centralized PSTN breakout and URI dialing. Within CUCM a SIP trunk points to destination addresses and uses a SIP trunk security profile and SIP profile. Provider SIP trunks normally terminate on an SBC such as CUBE for security and interworking.

Example

CUCM has a SIP trunk to a pair of CUBEs, which in turn have SIP trunks to the ITSP over a dedicated interconnect.

Exam tip

Never terminate an ITSP SIP trunk directly on CUCM in exam designs; an SBC provides demarcation and security.
