Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)

A signaling protocol that sets up, modifies and tears down VoIP and video sessions, using port 5060 (unencrypted) and 5061 (TLS).

Definition

SIP handles call setup and registration, while RTP carries the actual media. SIP messages embed IP addresses, so NAT devices need SIP ALGs or other traversal methods.

Example

An IP phone registers with a call manager using SIP on port 5060.

Exam tip

SIP = signaling 5060/5061; RTP = media.
