SIP OPTIONS Ping

Periodic SIP OPTIONS requests used to monitor whether a SIP trunk peer is reachable and in service.

Definition

CUCM, CUBE and Expressway can send OPTIONS keepalives to their peers; a response, even a 4xx, indicates the peer is alive, while a timeout or 503 marks it down. CUCM uses this to immediately skip unavailable trunk destinations instead of waiting for INVITE timeouts, speeding failover. On CUBE the equivalent is voice-class sip options-keepalive on the dial peer.

Example

With OPTIONS ping enabled, CUCM marks a SIP trunk destination out of service and routes calls to the next trunk in the route list.

Exam tip

OPTIONS ping improves failover time; without it, CUCM must wait for INVITE retries to fail.
