Serverless Computing

Cloud execution model where the provider manages servers and scaling, and customers pay only for actual usage.

Definition

Serverless includes FaaS (AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, Cloud Run functions), serverless containers (Cloud Run, Fargate) and serverless data services (DynamoDB, Aurora Serverless, BigQuery). Benefits include no server management, automatic scaling (often to zero) and pay-per-use pricing; trade-offs include cold starts, execution limits and provider coupling.

Example

An image-processing pipeline uses S3 events, Lambda and DynamoDB with no servers to patch.

Exam tip

Serverless does not mean there are no servers; it means the customer does not manage them.
