Function as a Service (FaaS)

Serverless compute model that runs individual functions in response to events, billed per invocation and execution time.

Definition

FaaS lets developers deploy single-purpose functions that the platform executes on demand when triggered by events such as HTTP requests, queue messages or file uploads. The provider handles servers, scaling and runtime patching, and the function scales to zero when idle.

Example

An AWS Lambda function resizes images whenever a new object is uploaded to an S3 bucket.

Exam tip

FaaS is a subset of serverless; watch for limits such as maximum execution duration and cold start latency in scenario questions.
