Event-Driven Architecture (EDA)

Architecture in which components communicate by producing and reacting to events, typically through brokers, enabling loose coupling.

Definition

In event-driven systems, producers emit events (state changes) to routers such as EventBridge, Event Grid or Pub/Sub, and consumers react asynchronously. This enables independent scaling, extensibility and resilience but requires handling eventual consistency, idempotency and duplicate events.

Example

A new-order event triggers inventory, billing and email services independently without the order service calling each one.

Exam tip

Consumers in event-driven systems should be idempotent because most brokers deliver at least once.
