Rollover Cable

A cable with pins reversed end to end (1 to 8, 2 to 7 and so on), used to connect a computer serial port to a network device console port.

Definition

Also called a Cisco console cable, it usually has an RJ45 on one end and DB-9 or USB on the other. Modern devices also offer USB or micro-USB console ports. Terminal software such as PuTTY connects at 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit by default.

Example

A technician connects a laptop to a new switch's console port with a USB-to-RJ45 rollover cable.

Exam tip

Default console settings are 9600 8-N-1, no flow control.
