Straight-Through Cable

A twisted-pair cable with the same pinout (both T568A or both T568B) on each end, used to connect unlike devices.

Definition

Traditionally, straight-through cables connect a host to a switch or a router to a switch, where one side is MDI and the other MDI-X. With Auto-MDIX, straight-through cables work for nearly all connections today.

Example

A PC connects to a wall jack and switch with straight-through patch cables.

Exam tip

Without Auto-MDIX: unlike devices = straight-through; like devices (switch-switch, PC-PC, router-PC) = crossover.
