Console Port

A serial management port on network devices that provides direct command-line access without network connectivity.

Definition

The console is used for initial configuration, password recovery and troubleshooting when the device is unreachable over the network. It is a form of out-of-band management. Physical access to the console should be restricted because it can be used for password recovery.

Example

A new router is configured for the first time through its console port.

Exam tip

Console access works even when the device has no IP configuration.
