Crossover Cable

A twisted-pair cable with T568A on one end and T568B on the other, swapping transmit and receive pairs to connect like devices.

Definition

Crossover cables connect devices of the same type, such as switch to switch, PC to PC or router to PC, when Auto-MDIX is unavailable. A full Gigabit crossover also swaps the blue and brown pairs, though Gigabit devices handle pair swaps automatically.

Example

Two legacy switches without Auto-MDIX are cascaded with a crossover cable.

Exam tip

Router to PC directly is a "like" connection and needs a crossover in classic exam logic.
