Refactor

Migration strategy that re-architects an application to use cloud-native features, also called re-architect.

Definition

Refactoring changes code and architecture, for example breaking a monolith into microservices or serverless functions with managed data stores, to improve scalability, agility and cost. It requires the most time and effort and is justified by strong business need for new capabilities.

Example

A monolithic order system is redesigned into Lambda functions, DynamoDB and EventBridge to handle seasonal spikes.

Exam tip

Refactor delivers the most cloud benefit at the highest cost and risk; choose it when scalability or agility requirements cannot be met otherwise.
