7 Rs of Cloud Migration

Seven migration strategies: retire, retain, rehost, relocate, repurchase, replatform and refactor.

Definition

The 7 Rs, popularized by AWS and extending Gartner's original 5 Rs, classify each application in a portfolio by how it will move to the cloud, from no move (retire, retain) to minimal change (rehost, relocate), new product (repurchase), modest optimization (replatform) and full redesign (refactor/re-architect). Choice depends on business value, technical fit, cost and timeline.

Example

A portfolio assessment marks 20 percent of apps to retire, 50 percent to rehost and 10 percent to refactor.

Exam tip

Expect matching questions: SaaS replacement equals repurchase; minor changes like moving to managed DB equals replatform; redesign to serverless equals refactor.
