Routing & Switching · Intermediate

Origin Attribute

A well-known mandatory BGP attribute indicating how a route entered BGP: IGP (i), EGP (e) or incomplete (?).

Definition

Routes injected with the network command are IGP, while redistributed routes are incomplete. IGP is preferred over EGP, which is preferred over incomplete. The EGP code is effectively obsolete.

Example

show ip bgp shows a trailing i or ? per path.

Exam tip

A '?' in show ip bgp output means the route was redistributed.
