Mutual Redistribution

Redistributing routes in both directions between two routing protocols, a common source of loops when done at multiple points.

Definition

With two or more redistribution points, routes can be fed back into their original domain with a better AD or metric, causing suboptimal routing or loops. Solutions include tagging routes at redistribution and denying tagged routes in the reverse direction, adjusting AD, or filtering with prefix lists.

Example

route-map OSPF-TO-EIGRP deny 10 / match tag 90 prevents EIGRP-originated routes returning to EIGRP.

Exam tip

Route tagging with deny-on-tag is the classic fix for multipoint mutual redistribution loops.
