Motherboard

The main circuit board that connects the CPU, memory, storage, expansion cards, and I/O.

Definition

The motherboard provides the CPU socket, memory slots, chipset, expansion slots, storage connectors, firmware chip, and rear I/O ports. Its form factor determines case compatibility and the number of slots. Failures can show as no POST, intermittent shutdowns, or dead ports.

Example

An ATX motherboard with four DIMM slots, two M.2 slots, and three PCIe x16-length slots.

Exam tip

Swelling or leaking capacitors on a motherboard indicate failure and require board replacement.
