CPU Socket

The motherboard connector that holds a CPU and links it to power, memory, and the chipset.

Definition

A CPU socket is a mechanical and electrical interface designed for a specific processor family, such as Intel LGA 1700/1851 or AMD AM4/AM5. A CPU only works in its matching socket, and the motherboard chipset and firmware must also support that model. Sockets use a retention mechanism (load plate or lever) to hold the processor in place.

Example

An AMD Ryzen 9000-series CPU uses the AM5 (LGA 1718) socket.

Exam tip

If a question says a new CPU fits the socket but the PC will not POST, suspect the BIOS needs an update to recognize the processor.
