Microphone Array

A group of microphone elements whose signals are combined with DSP beamforming to form steerable pickup lobes.

Definition

Beamforming arrays, often mounted on ceilings or in video bars, steer pickup toward talkers and away from noise sources, either in fixed zones or automatically. They provide a clean table and flexible coverage but need careful placement relative to loudspeakers and HVAC. Arrays may integrate AEC and automixing and often connect via Dante or USB.

Example

A ceiling beamforming array covers an 8 m by 6 m room with eight steerable lobes over Dante.

Exam tip

Beamforming arrays reduce visible microphones but still depend on room acoustics and AEC.
