Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC)

DSP processing that removes far-end audio picked up by local microphones so remote participants do not hear their own voices.

Definition

AEC compares the microphone signal with a reference signal of what is being played through local loudspeakers and subtracts the modeled echo. Each microphone channel ideally has its own AEC. Effective AEC depends on the correct reference, linear loudspeaker playback, adequate convergence time and reasonable room reverberation; nonlinear processing suppresses residual echo.

Example

Remote participants hear their own voice delayed because the AEC reference was taken before, not after, the local volume control.

Exam tip

Echo heard by the far end is caused by the near-end room; fix AEC in the room where the echo is created.
