Boundary Microphone

A microphone mounted flush with a surface such as a table or ceiling to use the boundary for increased sensitivity.

Definition

Boundary microphones avoid comb filtering caused by reflections from the surface because the capsule sits at the boundary, and they gain about 6 dB of sensitivity from the pressure doubling. They are common on conference tables. They also pick up table noise such as typing and paper rustling.

Example

Two boundary microphones on a long boardroom table cover twelve participants.

Exam tip

Boundary placement avoids comb filtering from table reflections.
