Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

A flat-panel display that uses liquid crystals and a backlight to produce images.

Definition

LCD panels do not emit light on their own and rely on LED backlighting (older units used CCFL). Panel types include TN, IPS, and VA, each with different viewing angles, contrast, and response times. A dim but visible image usually indicates a backlight failure.

Example

Shining a flashlight on a dark laptop screen reveals a faint image when the backlight has failed.

Exam tip

Faint image visible with a flashlight = backlight or inverter issue, not a GPU failure.
