Linux Namespaces

A Linux kernel feature that isolates process views of system resources such as PIDs, network, mounts, users, IPC, and hostnames.

Definition

Containers are processes placed in their own namespaces, so they see separate process trees, network interfaces, and filesystems. Kubernetes pods share network and IPC namespaces among their containers.

Example

Inside a container, ps shows the application as PID 1 because of the PID namespace.

Exam tip

Do not confuse Linux namespaces (isolation) with Kubernetes namespaces (logical grouping).
