Control Groups (cgroups)

A Linux kernel feature that limits, accounts for, and isolates CPU, memory, I/O, and other resources for groups of processes.

Definition

Container runtimes use cgroups to enforce resource limits; Kubernetes requests and limits translate into cgroup settings. cgroup v2 is the unified hierarchy used by modern distributions.

Example

docker run --memory 512m --cpus 1.5 sets cgroup limits.

Exam tip

Namespaces isolate what a process can see; cgroups limit what it can use.
