Laser Imaging Process

The seven-step sequence a laser printer follows: processing, charging, exposing, developing, transferring, fusing, and cleaning.

Definition

In CompTIA's model, the printer processes the page into a raster image, charges the drum, exposes it with the laser, develops by applying toner, transfers toner to paper, fuses it with heat and pressure, and cleans residual toner and charge from the drum. Each step maps to specific components and print defects.

Example

Toner that smears off the page indicates a failure in the fusing step.

Exam tip

Memorize the order: Processing, Charging, Exposing, Developing, Transferring, Fusing, Cleaning.
