Industrial, Scientific, and Medical Band (ISM)

Unlicensed frequency bands, including 902-928 MHz and 2.400-2.4835 GHz, used by Wi-Fi and other devices.

Definition

ISM bands were originally reserved for non-communications use but now host Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, and many other technologies. Users operate without a license but must follow power and equipment rules. Interference is common because many technologies share them.

Example

Microwave ovens and Wi-Fi both use the 2.4 GHz ISM band.

Exam tip

2.4 GHz is ISM; 5 GHz Wi-Fi is mostly U-NII.
