Regulatory Domain

The set of allowed frequencies, channels, and power limits for a country or region.

Definition

APs must be configured for the correct regulatory domain, which governs channels, power, DFS, and outdoor use. Examples include the FCC (US), ISED (Canada), ETSI/CEPT (Europe), and MIC (Japan). Using the wrong domain is illegal and can disrupt clients.

Example

Cisco APs use a -B domain for the US and -E for Europe.

Exam tip

APs and controllers must share a matching country code to join and operate.
