Generation-Based Fuzzing

Fuzzing that builds test inputs from a model, grammar or specification of the expected input format.

Definition

Also called smart or protocol-aware fuzzing, it produces structurally valid inputs that pass parsers and reach deeper logic. It requires more setup effort than mutation fuzzing.

Example

A grammar-based fuzzer generates syntactically valid but unusual SQL statements for a query parser.

Exam tip

Smart fuzzing reaches deeper code but requires a format model.
