Protocol Fuzzing

Fuzzing network protocol implementations by sending malformed or out-of-sequence messages.

Definition

Protocol fuzzers must handle state (handshakes, sessions) and are used heavily for embedded, IoT and ICS devices, where crashes can affect physical processes. Testing should occur in labs, not on production control systems.

Example

Fuzzing a PLC's Modbus/TCP stack in a test lab reveals a crash on malformed function codes.

Exam tip

Never fuzz production OT systems; use a test bench.
