Mutation-Based Fuzzing

Fuzzing that creates test inputs by randomly modifying valid sample inputs.

Definition

Also called dumb fuzzing, it needs no knowledge of the input format, so it is quick to set up, but it may struggle with checksums and strict formats.

Example

Flipping random bits in a set of sample PDF files and opening each in the viewer.

Exam tip

Mutation = modify samples; generation = build from a model or grammar.
