Fuzz Testing

An automated testing technique that feeds large volumes of malformed, unexpected or random input to a program to find crashes and bugs.

Definition

Fuzzing excels at finding memory corruption, parsing errors and unhandled exceptions. It is most effective with sanitizers to detect silent memory errors and with coverage guidance to explore new code paths. It is a verification practice in the Microsoft SDL and SSDF.

Example

Fuzzing an image decoder with mutated PNG files uncovers a heap overflow.

Exam tip

Fuzzing finds crashes and robustness flaws; it is weak for logic and authorization bugs.
