Coverage-Guided Fuzzing

Fuzzing that uses instrumentation feedback about which code paths were executed to prioritize inputs that reach new code.

Definition

Tools such as AFL++, libFuzzer and Go's native fuzzing keep inputs that increase coverage and mutate them further, efficiently exploring program behavior. It is the dominant modern approach.

Example

libFuzzer saves an input to the corpus because it reached a previously unexplored branch.

Exam tip

Feedback from coverage is what makes modern fuzzers effective.
