Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

The sudden flow of static electricity between objects that can damage electronic components.

Definition

ESD can destroy or degrade components with discharges far below what a person can feel. Prevention includes antistatic wrist straps, mats, bags, touching grounded metal, and controlling humidity. Damage may be latent, causing failures later.

Example

Clip a wrist strap to the bare metal chassis before handling RAM.

Exam tip

ESD damage can be invisible and delayed; always use ESD protection.
