Double Data Rate SDRAM (DDR SDRAM)

Synchronous DRAM that transfers data on both the rising and falling edges of the clock signal.

Definition

DDR generations (DDR3, DDR4, DDR5) increase speed and reduce voltage, and each uses a different notch position so modules cannot be mixed. Speed is expressed in mega-transfers per second (MT/s), such as DDR5-6000. Modules must match the motherboard's supported generation.

Example

A DDR4 DIMM will not physically fit a DDR5 slot because of the keying notch.

Exam tip

Generations are not interchangeable; the notch location prevents incorrect installation.
