Dedicated Graphics Card (dGPU)

A separate expansion card or chip with its own GPU and video memory (VRAM) for graphics and compute.

Definition

A dedicated or discrete GPU has its own VRAM (GDDR6/GDDR7) and typically installs in a PCIe x16 slot. High-end cards need supplemental power connectors such as 8-pin PCIe or 12V-2x6. They are used for gaming, CAD, video editing, and AI workloads.

Example

An NVIDIA GeForce RTX card installed in the top PCIe x16 slot with a 12V-2x6 power cable.

Exam tip

When building a gaming or CAD workstation, specify a dedicated GPU and enough PSU wattage.
