Daemon

A background process that runs without an interactive terminal, typically providing a system service.

Definition

Daemon names often end in d, such as sshd, httpd and crond. On modern Linux, daemons are managed as systemd service units, and Windows calls the equivalent concept a service.

Example

sshd listens on TCP port 22 as a daemon waiting for SSH connections.

Exam tip

A trailing d in a process name usually indicates a daemon.
