Resource Requests and Limits

Kubernetes settings that declare the minimum CPU/memory a container needs (requests) and the maximum it may use (limits).

Definition

The scheduler places pods based on requests. Exceeding a memory limit causes an OOMKill; exceeding a CPU limit causes throttling. CPU is measured in cores or millicores (500m) and memory in bytes (Mi, Gi).

Example

resources: {requests: {cpu: 250m, memory: 256Mi}, limits: {memory: 512Mi}}

Exam tip

Memory over limit = OOMKilled; CPU over limit = throttled, not killed.
