Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The main processor that fetches, decodes, and executes program instructions in a computer.

Definition

The CPU executes instructions from memory using one or more cores, each with its own execution units and registers. Performance depends on core count, clock speed, instructions per clock (IPC), and cache size. Desktop CPUs install in a motherboard socket, while most laptop and mobile CPUs are soldered (BGA) to the board.

Example

An Intel Core Ultra 7 or AMD Ryzen 7 is a desktop/laptop CPU with 8 or more cores.

Exam tip

Exams expect you to match a CPU to a compatible socket and chipset; a CPU that physically fits is not always supported without a BIOS update.
